Firefighters receive award.

On Wednesday, Dec. 15, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) honored City of Taylor Fire Chief Daniel Baum, Assistant Fire Chief Bobby Copeland, and Lt. Eric Engelke with the Patriot Award, awarded each year to supervisors and bosses of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve. The award was presented by Hayward Bethel from ESGR Employer Support in a ceremony at Fire Station 1.

The ESGR Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve, or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member, may nominate individual supervisors and bosses for support provided directly to the nominating Service member and his or her family. Chief Baum, Assistant Chief Copeland, and Lt. Engelke were nominated by firefighter Justin Bilicki, who has been with the Taylor Fire Department since Summer 2021 and is also a service member in the National Guard. He was called into active duty in October and returned to duty at the Taylor Fire Department in December. Firefighter Bilicki nominated Chief Baum, Assistant Chief Copeland, and Lt. Engelke for their continued support and assistance during his deployment with the National Guard.

“We’re really honored that Justin nominated us for this award,” Assistant Chief Copeland said, “He’s been a great asset to the Taylor Fire Department and we’re really glad to have him back in service here at the Fire Department and we’re very proud of his service with the National Guard.”

Assistant Chief Copeland and Lt. Engelke were all presented with a Department of Defense Certificate of Appreciation and a lapel pin by Mr. Bethel. Chief Baum was unable to attend, and firefighter Bilicki accepted the award on his behalf.
