Taylor joins nationwide Hidden Heroes Cities initiative

Taylor is pledging its support for the community’s military and veteran caregivers by becoming the seventh city in Texas to earn the designation of Hidden Heroes City. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation established the national program in 2016 in support of the spouses, parents, family members and friends who are caring for our nation’s wounded warriors. By becoming a Hidden Heroes City, Taylor commits to help identify local military caregivers and connect them to a community of their peers – all while deepening community resources to offer vital support. There are 115 cities across the country designated as Hidden Heroes Cities.

Taylor resident Tara Plybon was chosen to represent the foundation as part of its 2017 Class of Caregiver Fellows, and will accept a Mayoral Proclamation at the meeting on Thursday, June 14. Plybon is will serve in the role for Taylor until 2019. Her husband, Todd, served in Afghanistan where he was injured. She became his caregiver during his healing process, handling medical appointments, his medications and running the household.

“I am proud to call the city of Taylor my home for the past 22 years,” said Plybon. “Nothing can heal a veteran better than being in his or her own home space. By helping our caregivers we are helping our veterans. I applaud the City of Taylor for caring about our veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation.”

Currently there are 251 caregivers across the state and 2,710 in the nation who are involved in the Hidden Heroes program. Those who care for a wounded, ill or injured service member or veteran, and anyone who wishes to support military and veteran caregivers in the Taylor community are asked to visit
