The Texas Open Carry Law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2016 allowing for the legal open carry of firearms in Texas.

Open carry laws apply to the lawful possession of a firearm. By law, handguns must be carried in a shoulder or belt holster. Long gun and rifle laws have not changed and those weapons can still be carried openly without a holster.

There are certain restrictions to the law that must be followed in order to open carry and conceal carry. The infographic on the left is not all inclusive of the law. The Texas Penal Code outlines specifically how and where licensed handgun owners can carry openly or concealed carry.
